Rural Smiles Foundation Joins the International Observatory on Participatory Democracy (OIDP)
The Rural Smiles Foundation is pleased to announce that it has officially joined the International Observatory on Participatory Democracy, a global network dedicated to advancing participatory democracy, civic engagement, and inclusive governance.
Founded in 2001, OIDP brings together local governments, civil society organizations, researchers, and democratic innovators from across the world who are committed to strengthening citizen participation in public decision-making. The network serves as a global platform for sharing knowledge, promoting innovative democratic practices, and supporting initiatives that empower communities to play a meaningful role in shaping the policies and systems that affect their lives.
For the Rural Smiles Foundation, joining OIDP represents an important milestone in our ongoing efforts to promote civic participation, digital democracy, and inclusive governance in Uganda. Our work is rooted in the belief that sustainable development and democratic resilience can only be achieved when communities are actively involved in shaping decisions that affect them.
Over the past several years, the Rural Smiles Foundation has implemented a number of initiatives aimed at strengthening civic space and enabling community participation in governance processes. These efforts include community dialogues, advocacy campaigns, capacity-building programs for civil society actors, and digital innovations designed to expand access to democratic participation.
One of the key innovations developed by the organization is SPACEUG, a civic technology initiative created to strengthen civic space monitoring and support human rights defenders and civil society organizations in Uganda. The platform includes the Threat Monitoring Tool, which enables individuals and organizations to securely report threats, intimidation, and restrictions affecting civic actors. By generating aggregated data and enabling coordinated responses, the tool contributes to strengthening accountability, protection, and democratic resilience.
Through its membership in OIDP, the Rural Smiles Foundation seeks to contribute to global conversations on participatory governance while learning from innovative practices implemented in cities and communities around the world. The network provides a valuable space for collaboration between civil society, local governments, and democratic innovators working to expand citizen participation.
Participation in the OIDP network will also enable the Rural Smiles Foundation to share experiences from Uganda, particularly around community-driven civic engagement, digital civic infrastructure, and grassroots approaches to strengthening democratic participation in rural contexts.
The organization believes that participatory democracy is essential to building inclusive, responsive, and accountable governance systems. By ensuring that communities especially those historically marginalized have meaningful opportunities to engage in decision-making processes, societies can create more equitable and resilient institutions.
As a member of the International Observatory on Participatory Democracy, the Rural Smiles Foundation looks forward to contributing to global efforts that strengthen citizen participation, promote democratic innovation, and protect civic space.
Through collaboration, shared learning, and community-driven innovation, we remain committed to advancing a future where every citizen has a voice in shaping the decisions that affect their lives.
